Music and Cultures… I think

 Hey peoples!

So, this is My last blog post (I do not know how to feel about it, like actually… this has been sorta fun) and we had to find music on two continents. Well not knowing where to go, I may as well hit Russia because, why not? And secondly Brazil because I love Samba and definitely love Reggae music. It’s such a vibe and you are about to see why. So, lets dive in, shall we?

Welcome to Russia! In Russia, Traditionally I couldn’t find much on the musical landscape after a first couple searches besides some classical music by the “Mighty Handful” and while that’s great, there is more music in the world besides classical. Well after some intensive searching and contemplation of changing my area that I was searching in, I ran across Kalinka. Kalinka is a Russian Folk music genre started by composer Ivan Larionov. This genre because of when he started to write it, started around the 1860s, and was quite interesting… here take a listen ——>

See its great music, or maybe I just have a terrible taste in Music… could be both for sure. Well onto the modern side of things, Russian-Azerbaijani rap music. This genre of rap music originated in the Mid 2010s and has become on of the most stabilized forms of music for both the Russians and surrounding areas closer to Modern day Ukraine. A group called HammAli & Navai started by Alexander Aliev and Navai Bakirov in 2016 became a popular hit around the area with on of their major hits gathering about 143.2 million listens on Spotify. The major hit was called “Без тебя я не я” or “Without You I Am Not Me” If you like rap music, take a listen to this ——>

Welcome to Brazil! Samba originated in the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Because of when and how it originated, Samba became the most known traditional form of music worldwide from Brazil. Samba started around the communities in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro with Samba de Rosa or “Circle Samba” being the most common purposes for this music style. Because of the worldwide acknowledgment of Samba to this area, Brazil is known as the “County of Samba” Here is some Samba music, take some time to listen and maybe even dance a little bit ——>

WOW that was such enjoyable music or again could be my very terrible taste in music… and just imagine how terribly I dance to this style of music. Yup, me dancing is now stuck in your head. Anyways the modern music in Brazil is similar to the Traditional style with a twist. Because of cultural blending and probably an influx of immigration, Maranhão reggae was created. Maranhão reggae started around the 1980s and is still a popular musical genre that blends Jamaican reggae, that started in the 1960s and Brazil’s version of Samba from the late 19th to early 20th century. One of the first couple YouTube videos that I found actually were Americanized versions of this Maranhão reggae using “I Need A Doctor” by Dr. Dre which I thought was quite cool. So, in consideration to that I tried to find it on here and welp… I struggled. But I did find some modern Maranhão reggae so take a listen —->

Well now that you have listened to some interesting or terrible music, depending upon your taste, have realized that me dancing is like something out of a horror film, and that the Russians really have music besides classical music, I think its time for me to wrap up and call it a night. Thanks for reading and listening and I hope you have enjoyed endeavoring upon my blog as I probably have yours.

Best Wishes,

Kolby

  2. Hi Kolby, I wouldn’t say that you have terrible taste in music because I enjoyed a few of your choices. My favorite song was the one with the lyrics Без тебя я не я. As an avid rap fan, it reminded me a bit of Khalid (Send me your location). The overall vibe of the song really reminded me of 2016.

  3. I also did Brazil! It was such a fun and interesting topic. When listening to songs by Brazilian artist, which style was your favorite?

  4. Hey Kolby! Nice to see you get sentimental about an assignment, I'm kinda sad about it too. I really like the Russia rap song Jony, I think it's called. It was soothing to listen to, so I added to my playlist :)
